As the retail industry enters a new era, lifestyle centers
dominate the new construction scene. The lifestyle center
brings with it a myriad of new problems, challenges and
blessings. Clearly, when it comes to building and furnishing
these projects, the status quo will no longer suffice. With

First, in many cases the existing products and solutions
(designed primarily for enclosed malls) simply do not meet
the needs of a lifestyle center. In fact, lifestyle centers
often require entirely new products that most manufacturers
still do not offer, such as fire pits, misting/cooling equipment,
outdoor kiosks or carts, and interactive children’s
play fountains.
Second, as the industry “goes lifestyle,” so
to speak, numerous manufacturers are clamoring to adjust.
Since re-tooling is expensive and time consuming, some companies
are cutting the proverbial corner by re-labeling indoor
furniture as outdoor furniture so that it can be marketed
to lifestyle centers. Others are making an honest effort
to adjust their products, but are in reality doing little
more than spraying their existing products with an outdoor
sealant.

an indoor product does not transform it into a viable outdoor
product. The abuse most products must undergo in an outdoor
